The award honors the efforts of small press publishers in providing a critical venue for short fiction in the area of speculative fiction. The award showcases the best original short fiction published by small presses in the previous year (2016).

An unusual feature of the selection process is that all voting is done with the identity of the author (and publisher) hidden so that the final choice is based solely on the quality of the story.

The winner is chosen by the members of the Washington Science Fiction Association (www.wsfa.org) and will be presented at Capclave (www.capclave.org), held this year on September 19-21, 2025 in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

My first WSFA Journal was July 1996. I’m doing this one 29 years later. I have been WSFA secretary for 14 years – from 1997-2003, 2010-2013, 2016-2020 – more than any other person (Elizabeth Cullen was secretary for eight years from 1957-1965 and Cathy Green for six years). You’d figure I would have learned my lesson by now, but no.

Treasurer said we had $$$, which is up over same time last year

The Committee to Discuss Science Fiction will meet after the 5/16 Third Friday WSFA meeting to discuss the April issue of Lightspeed Magazine.

June 6th, we will discuss the Hugo short fiction finalists – short stories, novelettes, and novellas.
June 20th, we will discuss the Hugo novel finalists.
July, 4th, we will discuss the other Hugo finalists, especially the series and Young Adult books.
July, 18th, we will discuss the finalists for the WSFA Press Award.

First Friday March Meeting

Treasurer reported that we have around $90k, which is up 3K from last year. We’re doing fine moneywise. Reminded people to pay their dues.

Capclave Present: Sherin Nicole quoted him a price of $260 for artwork. Cathy asked if it was possible to get the artwork before the end of the
month, so we could have bookmarks and rack cards at Awesomecon April 4-6. Sam said he would ask Sherin. There was discussion of GOHs and
appreciations.

WSFA Small Press Award: Carolyn said 165 stories have been processed so far, and increase of 10% from last year.
