WSFA Small Press Award now open for submissions

The Washington (DC) Science Fiction Association (WSFA) is pleased to announce that the submission period for the 2019 WSFA Small Press Award is now open and will close on April 7, 2019.

The WSFA Small Press Award honors the efforts of small press publishers in providing a critical venue for short fiction in the area of speculative fiction. The award showcases the best original short fiction published by small presses in the previous year (2018). An unusual feature of the selection process is that all voting is done with the identity of the author (and publisher) hidden so that the final choice is based solely on the quality of the story.

The winner is chosen by the members of the Washington Science Fiction Association and presented at their annual convention, Capclave (www.capclave.org), held on October 18-20, 2019.

Submissions should be sent to admin@wsfasmallpressaward.org
See our webpage  http://wsfasmallpressaward.org/The_Rules.php for details.

WSFA Journal January-February 2019

No, Paul is the Walrus, Not the Eggman

The 1/4/19 meeting began with “This is first Friday meeting of 2019,” said Prez Bob to the club’s cheers. Happy new year one and all. Started at 9:15. Cathy said no one emailed asking to be in the holiday list. 3 people said they emailed. Bob thanked everyone for their work in 2018 and happy new year in 2019.

Sam S. said that dues are payable. Please after the meeting, 20 bucks. As of Jan 1, $$$ a few days later a big XX paid from WSFA Press. This does not include XX from World Fantasy, still finishing the books. Year over year is XXX but due to last year’s XXX bill not paid until Feb. We’re doing okay.

WSFA Journal November-December 2018

Super-Earth Detected around Barnard’s Star

Minutes for WSFA Third Friday Meeting, November 16, 2018 in Arlington, Virginia. Recorded by acting secretary Kim Hargan

The meeting was called to order at 9:15 pm by Bob MacIntosh

It was noted that there was no First Friday meeting in November, as the majority of WSFA officers and members were at World Fantasy (which we co-ran with BSFS), and only five members showed up at the Maryland gathering.

Financial report: As of November 1 WSFA has $$$$ in its accounts, after having paid the hotel bill for Capclave. Capclave ended up XXX. Year over year comparison at this point would be a bit funky because of the timing of the bill payments last year. January 1 will be better for a finalized year over year comparison, which Sam S. predicts will show us ahead over last year.

WSFA Journal September-October 2018

The 9/7/18 First Friday in September began with an Alright gang,” went Prez Bob. “It’s that time. Alright. Bill, we just had a meeting now we’ll have a real one.” Cathy said 63% voted on the small press award, not enough to earn fudge. Treasurer reported not quite $$$ with a year-over-year difference of about $$$. So we’re doing fine. $$$$ with year to year $$$.

Capclave present: Cathy said most of you were here for the Capclave mega meeting. We ran through stuff. Will need volunteers especially load in and out, registration, con suite, Courtni said she would remind people. September 28th-30. Take flyers, bookmarks, put them up at work and everywhere. We need a publicity push. Bulk of program sent to Paul. Seven of the authors/publishers of the small press finalists are coming. That’s a pretty good showing. Paul has ordered the trophy which has arrived. Tell your friends to come to Capclave. It’s awesome.

Capclave Future: Cathy said Robert Sawyer will be GoH. It will be held in October.

Capclave 2020: Bill is waiting for at least bare bones contract before he can invite guests.

WSFA Journal July-August 2018

President Bob Macintosh presided over the 7/6/18 First Friday in July. Mr. Treasurer, care to join us, he said. Okay folks, let’s simmer down. It’s 9:14. Mark said if you want to simmer go outside.

Sam L read minutes and took changes.

Treasurer: We’re doing okay. $$$ with year over year $$$$.

Cap present: Cathy said we are having a Capclave meeting after the WSFA meeting.  We have a table at Shore Leave and one at Worldcon. If everyone does an hour a day we should be covered. We are looking for volunteer Dodo Smugglers. We’re doing things. Sam L is contacting Montgomery library about posting flyers. I don’t know where Sam P is at in programming. Survey will be going out on Tuesday and due by end of month. We still have many people who are in the maybe/no response category. Template is not clear on who responded. There are lots of detail things that go out. We need everyone to do a push with publicity. Please take flyers and put them out. Conventions, bookstores, libraries.

Shut Up & Write: YA Author Writing Panel *AT CENTRAL LIBRARY* Arlington, VA

Jon Skovron, the host for Shut Up & Write, a writing discussion series hosted by the Arlington Public Library and presented by Lit-Up! sent us this announcement.

All About Anthologies
Our next Shut Up & Write event is May 24th, and it’s going to be about writing YA short fiction and editing YA short fiction anthologies. We will have not one, but two anthology editors: Ellen Oh, and SU&W’s own beloved behind-the-scenes mastermind, Jessica Spotswood!

But that’s not all! Since I will be in Phoenix for Comic Fest that week, previous guest host (and short story author) Robin Talley has kindly agreed to return to Arlington and lead the discussion. You won’t have to listen to me prattle on about whatever thing pops into my head again until September.

Oh, yes, I suppose that’s a good reminder. Per usual, we will not have an event in July, so May 24th will be our final event until September. So please come and enjoy the lovely writing community we continue to build one last time before the summer break.
We hope you can make it to the Central Library at 1015 N Quincy Street in Arlington on May 24th at 7 pm!

And remember, as always, this event is FREE. If you know any other writers or people passionate about fiction and the art of storytelling who also like free events, please forward this email on to them. What’s the worst that could happen?

WSFA Journal May-June 2018

The 5-4-18 First Friday WSFA meeting began when Prez Bob banged his gavel. Alright ladies and gentlemen. Sam S fixed the clock. It’s the first Friday in May. “It’s election time,” said Bill. Sam L. summed last meeting. Nothing was done.

Sam S., treasurer, said, “Tonight is election night. To vote, you are supposed to be a member, check with me to see if you are a member and if not, see me. Treasurer’s report $$$ with a year over year of $$$.”

Capclave Present: Cathy said we are doing big push at Balticon. Need XX members. Sit at the table and be accurate. Use the dodos and make eye contact. If get 20 or 30 people do drawings for tschaskies. Table list here. Rodger said prelim schedule is up. If everyone does an hour or two, it won’t be a huge burden. Take flyers to conventions, book groups, gaming etc. We need all the publicity. Push it to your friends. We will have a table at Worldcon. When we were in Reno, people stopped by and took flyers. Publicity not just for this year. If going to San Jose, try to do an hour a day at the table. Also need help traveling with dodos. They understand about flying steerage (Sam S. Since they don’t normally fly.) Need people for Gaithersburg book festival on Sat the 19th. Contact Cathydalek@gmail.com. Also meeting on the 20th at Cathy’s. Learn how to use the program system. We’re…, so upsell it to friends. Share the info. If going to bookstore, leave flyers. We can reciprocate with stuff for our registration bag. We’ve been doing this for years, but people still don’t recognize that we are here. If know an author who will be interesting for programming tell them about it and Capclave@gmail.com. Tweet about it. And book your hotel room.
