CAPCLAVE

2001

Celebrating the Short Story in Science Fiction

Many thanks to everyone who helped to make Capclave 2001 a success. I hope we'll see all of you again next year.

No WSFA members, Capclave program participants, or hotel facilities were harmed by the terrorist attacks, the tornados, the solar flare, or the Nimda computer virus. Capclave will happen as scheduled. Here is the tenative program.

We do not have a membership ceiling, and it is not too late to register at the door (unless you're reading this after September 30th, the last day of the convention).

Capclave Guests

Capclave's Guest of Honor is Gardner Dozois, the editor of Asimov's Science Fiction and The Year's Best Science Fiction. The winner of more Hugos than any mortal can count, Gardner is an inexhaustible fount of fannish wisdom and weird doings. This is your chance to talk with the 2001 Worldcon's GOH without all the crowds.

Our Ghost of Honor is Joseph Mayhew, Hugo-winning cartoonist, author, librarian, and fan. Joe's death last year robbed us all of his cartoons, tales of fan history, and continuous work for fandom. Capclave will have a tribute to Joe and provide a chance for people to share the many things they've learned from him.

Special Art Exhibit: Worlds of Wonder, an incredible collection of cover art and illustrations in the genres of fantasy and science ficton.

Capclave Activities

As a small con in our first year, we have chosen to focus on short stories in science fiction and fantasy. This means we will feature:

There are many things we may want to have someday but currently cannot provide in our small hotel (like a masquerade, babysitting, children's program, art show, or gaming.)

Capclave Programming

Since Capclave is a brand-new con we are free to try a different program structure. The Capclave program will emphasize short speculative fiction. Our Guest of Honor, Gardner Dozois, and other notable authors, editors, and fans of the short fiction form shall explore short fantasy and science fiction stories.

Some possible panel topics include: How authors put together characters, surroundings, and events and tell a tale in a few thousand words (or less); past masters of the short story; where are the short fiction markets and how to get your story published; writing for fun - fan fiction (fanfic); what authors can do in stories that they cannot in novels; the obligatory Buffy panel - is a Buffy episode more like a story or a chapter in a novel?; reactions to the 2001 Hugo choices; and some early picks for the 2002 short fiction Hugo Awards.
